"Generic Reconstitution"
The point of reference for these paintings comes from a 1992 Macmillan Visual Dictionary, a book I bought the year it was published. I remembered an observation one person made when I showed him the book. He said he didn't have much of a response to the images therein because they were too generic. I remembered that comment after all these years when I recently uncovered the book again. My primary thought with these small paintings is to give the generic illustrations within this book a new identity and presence through a process of layered, painterly painting. This will be an ongoing series. Directly below is the painting "Plane," 12” x 16,” oil/paper/panel, 2014. Below that is the cover of the dictionary, with images from the book on either side.
